Book Discussion - "Washington's General: Nathaniel Greene"
Organization: Westmoreland County Historical Society
Description: The Westmoreland Historical Society’s History Book Club is having an open meeting and book discussion on Tuesday, July 16 from 12 noon to 2 p.m. in the Education Room of the newly opened History Education Center at Hanna’s Town.
The book that the group will be discussing is Washington’s General: Nathanael Greene and the Triumph of the American Revolution by Terry Golway. The publishers describe Greene as “the overlooked Quaker from Rhode Island who won the American Revolution’s crucial southern campaign and helped to set up the final victory of American independence at Yorktown.” Greene is largely a forgotten personality save for the many places named in his honor across the country – Greensburg being one of them. The fact is that Nathanael Greene never set foot in Greensburg, and it is doubtful that many Westmoreland County residents know much about him. The book club members hope that many will read the book and come to join in with the discussion.
For several years the Westmoreland Historical Society has designated the first Sunday of August as Nathanael Greene Day to celebrate his August 7, 1742 birthday. Free admission and activities for children are featured. The History Book Club—in choosing this book for discussion and in opening the meeting to the public—hopes to help everyone learn more about this important patriot.
PROGRAM FEE: The cost of this program is $12 and includes a box lunch catered by Chef Mark’s Palate.
